There are many forms of hair loss. Genetics, hereditary conditions, auto immune and drug induced.

In this article we thought it would be a good idea write about the most common form of hair loss, Female Pattern Baldness.

Female Pattern Baldness

The day to day shedding of hair is a natural process of our hair growth cycle. We have on average 100,000 – 150,000 individual hair follicles on our head. When we look at the hair growth cycle you can see why it is not uncommon to lose are around 100 to 150 hairs per day as it is estimated that of 10-15% of your hair is in the Telogen Phase at any given moment and will move into the Exogen stage.

The hair growth cycle is complex and each individual hair follicle has its own stage – this is why it is often difficult to treat hair loss conditions

There are 4 phases of hair growth:

Anagen phase - known as the active / growth stage

Catagen Phase - which signals the end of the active hair growth

Telogen Phase - a resting stage for your follicles, but not actively growing

Exogen Phase - The shedding stage

As explained above, genetics, hereditary conditions and age can cause many women to experience female pattern baldness. This the most common cause and type of hair loss. It can also be caused by illness or medication and can be temporary or permanent. It can often appear in a number of ways full, partial and frontal.

If you have hair loss concerns, we would suggest you contact your Doctor in the first instance. They can give you a routine blood test just to check all is well with your internal health and also if you are on medication check and see if one of the side effects is hair loss.

Since Covid we have seen an increased number of customers suffering from hair loss around 30 -50 days after the illness. This is called Telogen Effluvium, TE, for short. This happens when an individual experiences a stressful event, such as an infection, like Covid 19 and a high temperature. Our bodies prematurely shift a larger than normal proportion of our growing anagen hairs straight into telogen state. So “Instead of the usual 10% of hairs that are in the resting, it can increase up to 50% of hairs in the resting and shedding, which is much more than normal,” The problem will right itself over a period of time, Your follicles just need to reset and reboot.

We understand that for women especially, losing your hair is difficult. Some women stop attending activities, become less social, lose confidence and worry about how love ones feel towards them. Please be assured if you feel this way it is completely normal and as much as this seems a daunting prospect, it is imperative to act as soon as you start to notice any form of thinning or excessive hair shedding.

Topical Solutions

Whilst there are lots of topical treatments available, they are primarily designed and manufactured for short term hair loss problems and to prevent the problem worsening. They are also not to be used during any kind of Chemotherapy treatment. Therefore, they need to be used long term at a considerable monthly cost to stop the condition getting worse. This is why many ladies look at hair replacement options such as wigs or toppers.
