What Essentials Do I Need When Dealing With Hair Loss?

I get asked constantly asked about accessories and what do you really need, If I had a pound for the amount of times I’ve seen people that have bought lotions, potions and lots of stuff that they do not really need I’d be a rich lady.

Here’s a list of accessories you should have when dealing with any kind of hair loss.

Wigs & Toppers

If you purchase a Synthetic wig you will need:

Fibre Shampoo & Conditioner

You may hear many fables that you can use baby shampoo and fabric conditioner but in truth these just won’t cut it. Baby shampoo has a clue in its name - it is specially formulated for babies and will not suffice. Our adult scalps produce more sebum and it is not designed to have the necessary ingredients for fibre hair. Also, the fabric conditioner is just that, for fabrics – you only have to pull out your washing machine draw and see where you add the conditioner you will notice a sludge like wax and this wax will sit on the fibres and noodle the fibre strands over a period of time and cause a buildup that may affect your style. The smell is also too strong to sit on your head and you could experience headaches like you would do wearing a strong perfume.

Serum and fibre oil

You will need this daily to help longevity and to stop your synthetic hair from tangling – especially if you have a wig shoulder length or below.

If you purchase Human Hair, you will need:

Human Hair Shampoo & Conditioner

Your Human Hair Wig / Topper doesn’t have the luxury of the blood supply or the oils that secrete from our scalps. Therefore, you need to ensure that you add the correct Human Hair products ,these are designed to add moisture and lustre. I cannot stress enough the importance to ensure you look after the wig / topper. Human hair wigs are an investment and should be treated like one to the best of your ability with products

Human Hair balm and heat defense products

As I have already stated Human hair does not have the added oils needed and will get dry. In the summer months the sun will have an effect and, in the winter, the central heating. How I explain this is that when you are in the car in the winter and you turn on the heating your lips can get very dry and can get chaffed – well as your lips are drying out it will have the same effect on your hair. I would also never style a human hair wig without heat defense, if you do not add it can lift colour much quicker and burn the cuticles causing split ends and breakage.

Brush

The brush you use on any wig / topper needs to have gentle bristles but strong enough to work through the wig / topper without causing damage. If the bristles are too strong you will stretch the fibre or cause balding on human hair.

Comb

If you have a curly wig / topper it is advisable to use a wide tooth comb rather than a brush, this is much more of a gentle approach and ensures you do not pull out the curl pattern.

Wig Stand / Poly Head

Keeping your wig / topper on a stand will ensure that it does not tangle. I always say if it’s not on your head or on a stand it needs to be in the box. Throwing it on your dressing table or on the side will not help you in the long run, it will matt and get very messy looking very quickly.

Wig Cap

A mesh cap or wig stocking can help keep your wig on if you have a little hair and it will also provide additional hygiene and freshness on the wig base.

Silicone Wig Band

Security is a big must when wearing a wig especially if you’re worried about the wind or exercising. These bands sit around your head circumference and give that extra glue like feel.

Sleep Cap

Did you know that 40-45 percent of body heat is lost through the head and neck this is due to the fact of increased blood flow around those areas in comparison with the rest of the body. Therefore, the likelihood is that you will feel colder.

I would suggest getting a sleep cap as you will be more likely to feel the cold when you are trying to get a good night’s sleep. You need to ensure that it is comfortable to wear so you need to find something that has no seams and the elastic so it’s not too tight.

Turbans / Bandanas

In my experience most customers do not wear their wig 24/7 and take it off when they reach the comfort of their own home or switch between wigs and headwear. Therefore, a few turbans and bandanas should be to hand to ensure coziness and warmth.
