How to wash a Human Hair Wig / Topper

Washing a human hair wig requires a careful and gentle approach to maintain its quality and lifespan.

 Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to wash a human hair wig:

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Wide-tooth comb or wig brush
  • A hydrating shampoo
  • A hydrating conditioner
  • Tepid water
  • Towel
  • Wig stand or head form

 

Step-by-Step Washing Guide:

Detangle the Wig:

Before washing, gently comb through the wig using a wide-tooth comb or wig brush to remove any tangles. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots.

 

Prepare the water:

Get the temperature to tepid – Do not use hot water as this can damage the hair, make it dry and cause colour fade

Shampoo Application:

Place the wig under the tap or shower and ensure that the water flows down onto the cap to mid length and then ends. Apply the shampoo onto your hand and again in a downward motion emulsify the shampoo into wig – this ensures the wig does not get tangled. if the wig is heavily soiled, you can shampoo it twice.

Rinse with Tepid Water:

Rinse the wig thoroughly to remove all traces of shampoo.

Condition the Wig:

Apply a small amount of conditioner to the hair, avoiding the cap or base. Leave the conditioner on for a few minutes to hydrate the hair.

Rinse Again:

Rinse the wig under tepid running water to remove the conditioner completely.

Gently Pat Dry:

Place the wig on a towel and gently pat it dry to remove excess water. Do not wring or twist the hair.

Air Dry Is Best:

Place the wig on a wig stand or a head form to maintain its shape. Allow it to air dry completely. Avoid using heat styling tools on wet hair.

Blow Dry:

If you need to dry using a hairdryer, ensure you use a heat defence product. Make sure you dry the cap before you dry the mid length and ends. Purchasing a wig block will help you dry and style.

 Styling: Style the wig only when it’s completely dry to prevent damage.

 Storage:

Store the wig on a wig stand or in its original packaging when not in use to maintain its shape.
